Right before Christmas last year, a young husband and father came into Virginia Career Works – Winchester Center. He worked production for a food company as a seasonal employee. He wanted a better life for his family.
As an English Language Learner from Puerto Rico who had come to the mainland with his extended family in 2106, the barriers to employment were steep.
He knew he wanted to make a better life for his family and having had a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in Puerto Rico, he wanted to use those skills here. First, he entered an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class at Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC).
Then, working with our partners at LFCC, we launched a very special program. This program was the first to combine ESOL and CDL training. It helped to teach the CDL coursework to English Language Learners and used the curriculum to teach both English and the skills needed to pass the exam. Read more about the program HERE.
Manuel took the CDL class at LFCC for about 6 weeks, with the support of the ESOL class. He studied hard. He went to every class. He practiced on the range. And then he took the exam, both the written and the road test…and he passed the very first time! He is now driving full-time for a large, national company and is providing a good life for his family.
